Optimum Motorsport to compete at Snetterton in the GT Cup Championship
Optimum Motorsport has an impressive track record in the GT Cup Championship, having dominated the three races it entered last year at Brands Hatch whilst claiming GTA/GT4 honours in 2016.
The British-based team is delighted to return to the series this coming weekend (26-27 October) for the Snetterton 300 Finale fielding the #15 Aston Martin Vantage GT4.
Having tested at the Norfolk-venue earlier this month the team will compete with invitation drivers David Holloway and Piers Johnson. The latter has a great deal of history in the British GT Championship where he made his debut in 2001. He went on to take wins with TVR and then stepped up to the FIA GT3 and GT1 championship.
A return to British GT followed with Ginetta with Barwell and then Speedworks. Last season saw the British driver competing in GT Cup with Century Motorsport where he finished second in class.David meanwhile has worked with Piers for a number of years and is looking forward to teaming up again this coming weekend.
“David has been looking at replacing his Ginetta to a new generation GT4 this year,” Piers explained. “He’s tested a number of the cars available during the year and with such a great brand in Aston Martin, has decided to enter the last round of GT Cup this season.
“We tested with Optimum Motorsport last week, the weather was very kind and was dry for the majority of the day,” he continued. “The car is very nice to drive, very different from our previous, being a lot heavier, but has more power. The day went very well, getting some mileage under our belts and getting quicker on each run.
“We still need to find some lap time to get near the front of the grid, so don’t expect to be on the top step, but we hope a top three is possible!”
The race weekend consists of practice and qualifying followed by Sprint and Pit Stop races on Saturday and Sunday.
